DONNER LAKE CRAWDAD DIVE
Camping will be done at Goose Meadows which is located on Highway 89 between Truckee and Tahoe City. It is a dry campground, no electricity, no running water – the water is good to drink, but is at the top of the campground; not that far to walk, but is not in each individual site. There are outhouse facilities which are nice and clean. It is a permanent out house structure. Call the National Recreation Reservation Service Number: 888-448-1474 or go on line at RECREATION.GOV or RESERVEAMERICA.com and make your reservation. The cost is around $34.00 plus $9.00 reservation fee for two nights.
If you are attending we would like to have you bring enough of the following to cover each person in your family so that there is enough food to cover dinner and breakfast.
For the crawdad feed on Saturday evening you will need to bring these items per person:
3 – ears of corn on the cob
3 – fair sized red potatoes
4 – good sized carrots
4 – pieces or stalks of celery
2 – bell peppers green or red
2 – onion yellow or red
2 – zucchini medium sized
We would also like to ask if each person would sign up for one other item:
For nibbling on before dinner such as a veggie tray, chip and dip, pickles or olives
Buns or French bread for dinner
Muffins, rolls or fruit for breakfast
We will bring all of the large cooking pots, the burners and all cooking utensils. We supply the eggs, cheese, coffee, sausage for breakfast, Cajun spice mix, silverware, plates and napkins.
We will not be bringing up the large tables or the folding chairs. So be sure to bring your own camping chairs to sit in.
Everyone participates in catching the crawdads for dinner. Please help in the preparation of the evening meal when we get back to camp that is what this event is all about. There will be vegetables to wash and cut, crawdads to be separated for size, and the vegetables to cook. After dinner there will be dishes to wash and dry to get them ready for breakfast in the morning.
We will be boiling up some of the vegetables without spices for those people not wishing to eat the Cajun cooking for Saturday night dinner.
For breakfast on Sunday morning; we will fry up the left over potatoes and vegetables into an egg scramble. We will have two separate batches of breakfast. One with and one without crawdads. And for those that don’t want the spice we will fry up a batch of vegetables and eggs without the spice.
If you do not care for crawdads, bring your own meat and a barbeque for dinner on Saturday night. We will not supply the barbeque up there. In that way you can enjoy the corn, potatoes and vegetables with us.
THINGS FOR YOU TO BRING:
Bring all your own camping gear and dive gear that you will be using for the weekend. Be sure to tell Joyce how many tanks you want to rent, there will not be any air fills available at Donner.
You will need a canvas bag to gather the crawdads in. They are fast and elusive and mesh bags do not work well. We will have 5 gallon buckets there to transfer them into and weed out the smallest and throw them back. So, go for the big guys. Hopefully; Keith will bring up his large cage to keep them in to keep them alive before going back to camp.
Ca. state law says that you will need a fishing license to catch these crawdads.
You need to have a dive flag with you or with whoever you are diving with. Steven can make the dive flag system up for you to buy. It is ready to go just attach it to your tank.
Whatever you want to drink and/or eat with dinner and for the rest of the weekend please be sure to bring it along.
Please bring any other food you will need for the rest of the weekend such as breakfast for Saturday morning and lunch for Saturday and Sunday, snacks and beverages.
We will do a lake clean up dive on Sunday so use your goodie bag for that as well.
SERIOUS DIVING…SERIOUS FUN
Aqua Divers will be residing in campsite #18 or #19, at the end of the South loop. We will be bringing the boat for diving, not everyone can fit at one time so there will be shore diving which is very easy to do.
