AQUA DIVERS NEWSLETTER
AUGUST 2011
We talked briefly about the Little Grass Valley Reservoir weekend. I elaborated on it in the July newsletter.
The weekend of August 13 & 14 a few of us went to Fort Bragg diving. We camped at Albion River Campground and enjoyed the beautiful weather. The sky was so blue, just slightly windy on shore and then the wind died down every night. It was choppy out in the ocean of course. Juan, Leroy and Steven went scuba diving on Saturday and Sunday and had two great dives. Steven took his spear gun and caught fish for a great fish fry on Saturday night. No one went Abalone diving this go around.
There was a scuba diver on another boat that came into dock with quite a catch. He shot a 28 pound Lingcod. That is what it weighed in at. Except we all saw that the fish had a very large stomach. We all stood around to see what was in that guys belly. When he cut into the fish out came at least a 5 pound partly digested Octopus. I don’t know how that Lingcod caught that big of an Octopus, but he was at one time HUGE!
Keith has been receiving e-mails from Ships to Reef and they have been keeping him updated on the progress of the ship they are trying to sink off the coast of Fort Bragg in the Mackeriker State Park vicinity. They have the ship out of the bay and are transporting it to Mare Island where they will begin the preparation work on getting it ready to sink. Keith has volunteered to help with his welding abilities whenever they reach that point. If anyone else wants more information go to: CaliforniaShipstoReefs.org and see what is happening. Or if you want to help in any way you can sign up to volunteer.
We discussed the Crawdad dive at Donner Lake set for September 10 & 11. We will be camping at Goose Meadows. If you are coming up for one day or the other just let us know. If you are staying for the weekend, then make your own reservations.
We handed out a sign up sheet for people to bring one item for munchies before dinner, dessert after dinner, or something to snack on while breakfast is being prepared. If you are going; I have the list at the shop and whenever you can stop by you can sign up for something.
I also had an information packet to hand out as an explanation of what the Crawdad dive weekend is all about. Please pay attention to the list of vegetables for each person to bring for the Crawdad boil dinner on Saturday night. Any left over vegetables will be used in the breakfast. Please find it attached.
SERIOUS DIVING…SERIOUS FUN
