Monterey Water Conditions

AQUA DIVERS

AQUARIUS DIVE CLUB NEWSLETTER

SEPTEMBER 2010

NEWS FROM THE SEPTEMBER MEETING:

We talked about the Donner Lake crawdad dive weekend. The weather conditions left a lot to be desired.  It was windy and cold the entire weekend up there.  The water temperature wasn’t cold, but when you got out the wind sure took its toll.

We only had 7 divers this year and for some reason we didn’t land in a mess of crawdads.  Keith wasn’t able to get a trap built, so maybe next year we will have the trap to catch a bunch.  He said he wanted free range crawdads this year.  Leroy had equipment problems so he wasn’t able to get down too deep; so he and Joyce stayed at about 25 feet deep and only got a couple.  Saw a lot of babies, but no big keepers.  John and Juan were new to crawdad diving so it took a couple of dives for them to catch onto how to capture those elusive crawdads.  Kristina and Sarah were the ones that came up with the most I believe.  Matt Cottrell showed up and dove by himself, and he brought back quite a few for dinner as well.

Steven and I anticipated the fact that we probably wouldn’t get very many crawdads due to having only 7 divers; so we supplemented the dinner with shrimp which was quite tasty in the hot Cajun spices.   We always bring sausage for breakfast and put it in the batch with crawdads and the batch without crawdads.  But this time for breakfast we had three different batches; one with crawdads, one with shrimp, one with sausage.

We had a little bit of trouble getting the boat in the water due to a dead battery in the boat.  So, Steven and Keith removed  one  of the batteries from Steven’s pickup and put in the boat.  So, we were delayed getting an early start; but by the time we got the boat down to the dock, the rest of the group showed up there from camp about the same time.

We also had a little trouble with the camp host and our regular camping site was taken; so we were spread out and didn’t have too much intermingling amongst our campers because of that.  It was okay, but it broke the group up into two groups and there was no sitting around the campfire on Friday night.  There were four or five of us around the campfire on Saturday night after dishes were done and a group of four playing cribbage, the others went back to their own campsite.  It was chilly so none of us no matter what we were doing stayed up very late.  Everyone had a good time doing their own thing!

NEW BUSINESS:

Since Steven is still laid up with his Achilles heel he won’t be able to set the navigation points in Tahoe at Sand Harbor for the compass navigation poker run.  Keith has volunteered to set the fish points with Joyce.  That will be held September 11.  The gates open at 8:00am at Sand Harbor.  It always takes awhile to set up our dive site and go out to set the navigation points that morning, so usually the first team of divers don’t get in the water until around 10:00am.  But, it is a good idea to get there when the gates open so you can get a close parking spot and don’t have to carry your gear so far.   And get a place situated on the beach.  There are a lot of sun bathers there.  Bring your own lunch and drinks for the day.  Once the poker run is finished, usually a group of us go out to dinner.  You can do whatever your schedule allows for the evening.  Since there won’t be any group camping some people get a motel room, some people head on home.  Others stay to dive the next day.  A flyer was handed out at the meeting explaining the poker run dive.

The pumpkin carving contest was set for October 17.  It will start at 2:00pm and it will be a potluck.  Please bring something you want to put on the barbeque for yourself and a small side dish.  And bring your own beverage as well.  Aqua Divers will supply the usual plates, silverware, steak knives, paper towels, cups, ice, bowls, dessert plates, salt, pepper, mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise.  Bring your own dive gear, we will supply the air tanks.  Also bring your own carving knife.  Aqua Divers will supply the pumpkins, so if you are lucky or unlucky be prepared for drawing the large pumpkin.  We get all shapes and sizes for you.  The pumpkins are numbered and you draw a number and that is the pumpkin you carve a face on.  There will be prizes given away for three categories to club members.

The other thing discussed was Al Griego wanted us to announce his birthday bash party and extend and invitation to all dive club members.  He will be calling his other friends and relatives.
